Turmeric has many medicinal properties. It is most commonly used as a spice. Apart from this, turmeric is also used in medicines and cosmetics. There are many varieties of turmeric. In which Kasturi , Kesari, Rashmi, Sudarshana, Amalapuram, Pitambara, Sonali, CL. 326 Maidukur, Cl. 327 Thekurpent etc. are prominent.

pests of turmeric

• Tuber fly: These flies destroy turmeric by eating it while it is growing. They can be got rid of by using grains of 10 kg forte 10 g per hectare.

• Stem borer: This pest causes maximum damage to turmeric crop. It can be controlled by spraying 0.05% dimethoate or phosphomidan.

• Baruth: This type of pest destroys the leaves and spoils the crop. These can be controlled by spraying by mixing 2 ml dimethoate or methyl demeton in one liter of water. To control it, spraying of 0.1 percent melithion should be done at 21 days interval.

diseases of turmeric

• Tuber rot: Due to this disease, the upper parts of the plants get spots and after few days the plants dry up. To avoid this disease, excavation of the affected areas should be done by applying Bordeaux mixture or Dithane M -45.

• Foliage disease: In this disease, spots start appearing on the leaves. The occurrence of this disease has a great effect on the yield of turmeric. To avoid this disease , spray of Dithane M-45 solution 2-3 times at an interval of 15 days.
