India ranks first in the production of jute in the world. Jute is the second most cultivated fiber crop in India after cotton. It is cultivated extensively in the eastern areas of West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. It is a versatile crop. Apart from making rope, it is also used as green fodder and green manure.
