Both the color and shape of kidney beans are like kidney, hence it is called kidney bean in English. It is used as a vegetable and pulse. Many types of nutrients are found in its grains like protein , carbohydrate, calcium, phosphorus, iron etc. It is cultivated as a cash crop because it is sold at a higher price in the market.

soil and climate

  • Sandy loam and sandy clay soil are good for its cultivation.

  • It should not be cultivated in saline and alkaline soils.

  • Rajma plants are sensitive to cold and water logging.

  • If the temperature exceeds 30 degree centigrade, the problem of flower drop starts.

  • Its flowers, pods and branches are adversely affected even in extreme cold.

farm preparation

  • Deep ploughing is done once with earth turning plow.

  • After this, do light plowing 2 to 3 times.

  • After plowing, make the field level by putting a pad in the field.

  • At the time of last tillage, add 2 to 2.8 tonnes of cow dung or compost manure per acre of land.

Fertilizer and weed control

  • Apply 20 kg nitrogen, 24 kg phosphate, 8 kg potash and 8 kg zinc per acre of field.

  • Spray 20 kg of nitrogen in the standing crop.

  • Weeds can be easily controlled through weeding.

  • Immediately after sowing, spraying of Pendimethalin @ 400 grams per acre of land in 240 liters of water controls weeds.

irrigation and harvesting

  • Irrigate every 25 days.

  • Do not allow water logging in the field.

  • It takes 120 to 130 days for the crop to become ready.

  • After harvesting, dry the crop in the sun for 3-4 days.

  • When the moisture remains 9-10 percent, separate the grains.
