Papaya cultivation time and other important information

These days horticulture farmers are getting attracted towards papaya cultivation. In comparison to other fruits, it takes less time and cost to cultivate papaya with less area. The demand for delicious and nutritious papaya is always there in the market. Therefore farmers cultivating papaya can earn more profit in less time as compared to traditional crops. Best time for papaya cultivation

  • Papaya can be cultivated successfully thrice a year.

  • For the cultivation of papaya in Kharif season, transplanting of plants should be done in the month of June-July.

  • Apart from this, transplanting of plants is also done in the month of September-October.

  • For the cultivation of papaya in spring, transplant the plants in the month of February-March.

Suitable soil and climate

  • The optimum temperature for seed germination is 35 degree centigrade.

  • 10 degree to 26 degree centigrade temperature is suitable for the growth of plants.

  • It should be cultivated in loamy soil and light loamy soil.

  • Avoid cultivating papaya in heavy and sandy soil for good yield.

  • The pH level of the soil should be between 6.5 to 7.0.

  • While preparing the field, first do deep plowing for 1 time. This will destroy the weeds and harmful insects already present in the field.

  • After this, make the land level by doing light plowing 2 to 3 times.

  • 15 days before transplanting, prepare 50 cm wide pits of 50 cm depth in the field.

  • Keep a distance of about 2 meters between all the pits.

  • Fill all the pits by mixing dung manure, urea, mop with proper amount of soil.

  • After this, transplant the plants prepared in the nursery.

  • After planting the plants, fill the pits with soil to a height of 10-15 cm from the ground surface.

  • This can save the plants from falling. Also, rainwater will not accumulate in the stems and the plants will also be saved from rot.

  • Apply light irrigation immediately after transplanting the plants.

  • Irrigation is not required when it rains.

  • Irrigate at an interval of 5 to 7 days during summer season.

  • Irrigation should be done at an interval of 10 to 15 days in cold season.

  • The fruits are ready to ripen in about 9 to 10 months after transplanting the plants.

  • To make vegetables, harvest the fruits before they are ripe.

  • Harvest ripe fruits to use as fruit.

  • The fruits turn yellow and orange when ripe. Harvest the fruits at this time.
