Lemon can be cultivated in almost all regions of India. Lemon is rich in Vitamin C. Before cultivating it , get information about suitable soil, climate, field preparation, method of transplanting etc.

  • Light loamy soil with good drainage is best for this.

  • The pH level of the soil should be 5.5 to 7.5.

  • Do not cultivate it in heavy soil.

  • They can also be grown in slightly alkaline and acidic soils.

  • It is suitable for cultivation in intermediate humid climate for good yield.

Field preparation and manure-fertilizer management

  • Firstly plow the field 2 to 3 times.

  • After this, prepare pits about 75 cm wide and 75 cm deep at a distance of 4 to 5 meters.

  • Leave the pits open for a few days.

  • Fill all the pits with equal quantity of rotted manure and soil.

  • Before transplanting the plants, add 2 ml of chloropyriphos per liter of water to all the pits.

  • Now transplant the plants already prepared in the nursery in these pits.

Irrigation and Weed Control

  • Lemon plants do not require much irrigation.

  • Irrigate at an interval of 25 to 30 days in cold weather.

  • Irrigation should be done at an interval of 8 to 10 days during the summer season.

  • Irrigation is generally not required during the rainy season.

  • Control weeds in the field.

  • Keep destroying weeds by weeding from time to time.

Fruit harvesting and storage

  • The fruits are ready to ripen in about 6 months.

  • It should be harvested when the fruit is ripe.

  • Start harvesting when the color of the fruits turns from green to yellow.

  • Take special care at the time of harvesting so that there is no damage to the lemon peels. Break the fruit with branches about 1 cm apart.

  • After harvesting the fruits can be stored for 8 to 10 days at normal temperature.


  • The yield of lemons depends on the variety.

  • From 5 to 6 year old plants, 2,500 to 6,000 lemon fruits can be obtained per year.
