Irrigation Management in Mustard Crop

Mustard oil has been used for centuries in almost every household in India. Apart from this, mustard seeds are used in making many dishes. Irrigation is an important task to get a good crop of both yellow mustard or black mustard. By irrigating at the right time, we can get high quality crop.   • Mustard crop does not require much irrigation.

  • 4 to 5 irrigations is sufficient to get good yield.

  • The first irrigation should be done in the field immediately after sowing. This facilitates the germination of seeds.

  • After about 25 to 30 days of sowing, when the branches start growing in the plants, then second irrigation should be done.

  • Give third irrigation at the time of flowering of plants. Generally, the plants start flowering about 45 to 50 days after sowing.

  • At the time of pod formation, ie 70 to 80 days after sowing of seeds, give fourth irrigation.

  • Fifth irrigation you can do at the time of ripening of grains.

  • Irrigate the mustard crop by sprinkler method.

  • An improved crop of mustard can be obtained even by irrigation for 1 to 2 times in water-scarce areas.

  • To get good yield in rainfed areas, plow the field 2 to 3 times during the rainy season and use cow dung manure. By doing this the water holding capacity of the soil increases.
