India is the largest producer and consumer of turmeric in the whole world. Turmeric is cultivated in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Orissa, Gujarat, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Meghalaya and Assam. It is necessary to know these things before cultivating turmeric.

  • Hot and humid areas with good rainfall are suitable for its production.

  • Turmeric can be cultivated in all types of soils.

  • For its cultivation, loamy, alluvial and laterite soils are considered the best.

  • Farmers should take care that there is no water logging in the fields.

  • It is necessary to plow the field 4-5 times before sowing.

  • Sowing of turmeric in the month of April to July gives good crop.

  • Plants should be planted at a distance of 15 to 20 cm.

  • It should be irrigated every 5 to 7 days in summer season.

  • Irrigation should be done at an interval of every 15 days from the winter season.

  • Turmeric can be cultivated with crops like tur, moong, urad, soybean etc.

  • Turmeric crop is harvested in 7 to 10 months.
