Suitable time for cultivation of Petha

  • Petha is cultivated in both summer and rainy season.

  • For summer crop, sowing of seeds should be done from end of February to mid-March.

  • The sowing of seeds for the rainy season crop is done from the last week of June to the middle of July.

  • In hilly areas it is sown after the month of March.

Suitable soil and climate

  • For good yields, fertile land with proper drainage is required.

  • Heavy loamy soils are suitable for summer cultivars.

  • On the other hand, sandy loamy loam soil is suitable for farmers cultivating in Zayed.

  • pH of soil The level should be 6 to 8.

  • Its cultivation requires a tropical climate.

  • The temperature of about 15 degree centigrade is required for the seed to germinate.

  • A temperature of around 30 to 40 degree centigrade is better for good growth of plants.

Seed quantity and method of seed treatment

  • 2.4 to 3.2 kg of seed is required per acre of field.

  • Before sowing, treat seed with Thiram @ 2 gm per kg of seed.

  • In addition to thiram, the seed can also be treated with carbendazim.

  • First, do one deep ploughing with a soil turning plow. This will destroy the weeds and crop residues already present in the field.

  • After this, do light plowing 2 to 3 times.

  • At the time of plowing, mix 16 quintals of rotted cow dung, 8 kg of neem cake and 12 kg of castor cake per acre of land.

  • After plowing for cultivation in the summer season, run water in the field and make it plowed.

  • After 3-4 days of plowing, when the top layer of soil starts drying slightly, then after plowing the field once and plowing it.

  • After that prepare the beds in the field. Keep a distance of 3 to 4 meters between all the beds.

  • Sow the seed at a distance of 1 to 1.5 feet and a depth of 2 to 3 cm.

Irrigation and Weed Control

  • Irrigation is not required when it rains.

  • Irrigate at intervals of 2 to 3 days during summer season.

  • Irrigation is necessary at the time of flowering and fruit formation in the vines. Due to lack of moisture at this time, the yield decreases.

  • To control weeds, do the first weeding after 20 to 25 days.

  • After this, keep weeding and hoeing at an interval of 15 days after pat or weeds emerge.

Fruit harvesting and production

  • To make vegetables, harvest it when the crops increase in size and before the fruits are ripe.

  • Harvest the fruits after ripening to make sweets.

  • The yield varies from 120 to 240 quintals per acre of land, depending on the variety.
