In India, 85-89% of the water used is for agriculture. Apart from this, about 5% of the water is being used for drinking and domestic purposes, in which even a small saving of water used for agriculture can have a big and significant impact on the availability of drinking water.

  • What is a water-stressed area?

When the demand for drinking water exceeds the available quantity due to low water level or poor water quality in an area, it is called water-stressed area.

  • Water-stressed areas in India.

According to the 'Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas' released by the World Resources Institute (WRI), India is ranked thirteenth among the world's 17 'extremely water-stressed countries'. Nine states and union territories in India are classified as areas with extremely high water levels. Chandigarh tops the list, which includes Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
