celery cultivation

लेखक - Soumya Priyam | 24/11/2020

Ajwain, rich in many medicinal properties, is counted among some of the major spices. It contains many mineral elements like protein, carbohydrate, fat, fiber, phosphorus, calcium, iron, etc. It is cultivated for leaves as well as grains. Medicines are made from the oil extracted from its grains. See some information related to celery cultivation from here.

soil and climate

  • Light sandy loam soil and clay soil are best for good yield of celery.

  • It should not be cultivated in heavy and wet soils as there is a risk of drying of the plants.

  • The sandy soil is also not suitable for its cultivation.

  • The pH level of the soil should be between 6.5 to 8.

  • Better yields can be obtained if cultivated in cold and dry climate.

  • At the time of flowering, excess moisture in the environment proves to be harmful for the crop.

Field preparation, manures and fertilizers

  • While preparing the field, take out the crop residues present in the field.

  • After this, do deep plowing with a soil-reversing plow and leave the field open for some time.

  • Now do light plowing in the field 2 to 3 times.

  • At the time of tillage, add 8 to 10 tonnes of decomposed cow dung per acre of field.

  • 8 kg of nitrogen, 12 kg of phosphorus and 8 kg of potash are required per acre of field.

  • Add full dose of Phosphorus and Potash and half dose of Nitrogen at the time of preparation of the field.

  • After about 25 days of sowing, spray half the amount of nitrogen i.e. 4 kg nitrogen in the standing crop.

  • To make the soil friable and level, after plowing, a pad must be applied.

Irrigation and Weed Control

  • Give the first irrigation immediately after transplanting.

  • Take care that there is no water logging in the field.

  • Irrigate at intervals of 10 to 15 days as per requirement.

  • To control weeds, weeding is done at regular intervals.

harvesting and storage

  • It takes about 140 to 150 days for the crop to be ready.

  • The crop should be harvested when the color of the seed clusters turns brown.

  • After harvesting, dry it by keeping it in the shade.

  • After drying, both can be separated and stored in moisture free containers or sacks.
