Yes, Sahyadri Megha variety has been developed mainly to check the decline in paddy cultivation in many areas of Karnataka. It is a new red variety of paddy which is resistant to blast disease and rich in nutrients. It has been developed under hybrid breeding method by cross-breeding two varieties of paddy 'Akklu' and 'Jyoti'. Akkulu is a disease resistant and protein rich indigenous variety of Dhan. Red rice is popular among health conscious consumers these days. Presently the demand for red rice is increasing in the Indian market due to its medicinal and nutritional value.
