Various Activities of Sericulture Industry
There are many activities involved in this industry. These include planting trees for the food of the insect, rearing the insect, cleaning silk, cutting yarn, making cloth from yarn, etc.
Which crops should be cultivated for silkworm rearing?
Farmers should cultivate certain crops to feed silkworm. These crops include Mulberry, Palash, Gular, etc.
Silk made from the silkworm that feeds on mulberry plants is in high demand.
How is silk obtained?
The female moth lays 300 to 400 eggs at a time.
The larvae hatch from the eggs in about 10 days.
The larva feeds on the leaves and within 4 to 10 days the larva secretes protein from its mouth. When exposed to air, this protein hardens and becomes thread-like.
The larval insects form a circle around their body with silky threads. This sphere is called a cocoon.
After the formation of the cocoon, the insects lock themselves inside it.
The cocoons are put in hot water to obtain silk.
After putting in hot water the insects die and from the remaining cocoons we can make silk.
A silk thread of 500 to 1,300 meters long is obtained from a cocoon shell.
How many times a year can I get silk?
Silk can be obtained 4 to 6 times in a year.
If you buy a 10 day silkworm then you have to rear the silkworm for 20 days.
After this the insects stop eating and start producing silk.
