Melon: Selection of land and time of sowing

लेखक - Dr. Pramod Murari | 13/1/2021

Melon is in demand due to being a good source of Vitamin A and Vitamin C along with 90 percent water, 9 percent carbohydrates. In our country, it is mainly cultivated in Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. If you want to do the cultivation of melon this season, then choose the land and see the appropriate time of sowing from here to get a good crop.

Suitable time for sowing

  • In plains, it is sown in the second and third week of February.

  • In South and Central Indian regions, it is sown in October-November.

  • Sow on the banks of rivers in the last week of November and January.

  • The month of April - May is suitable for sowing in hilly areas.

Land selection and climate

  • Well drained loamy soil is best for its cultivation.

  • It can also be cultivated in sandy loamy soil with high water holding capacity and clay soil containing organic matter.

  • The pH level of the soil should be between 6 to 7.

  • Do not cultivate it in saline soil or such soil which has high salt content.

  • Fruits take longer to ripen when the moisture content in the air is high. On the other hand, the sweetness of fruits increases in westerly wind and dry weather.
