Linseed: An important crop among oilseed crops

Linseed is the second most important crop among oilseed crops. It is counted among fibrous crops. Its fiber is used in making thick cloth, rope, etc. The oil extracted from linseed seeds is used in the preparation of varnishes, paints, soaps, dyes, etc. China is the largest producer of flaxseed in the world. In Russia, Poland, Netherlands, France, Belgium, it is mainly cultivated to obtain fibre. Whereas in India, America and Argentina, it is cultivated for obtaining seeds.

In India, it is mainly cultivated in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Many medicinal properties are found in linseed plants from 2 to 2.5 feet high. According to Ayurveda, flaxseed is considered to be strong, bile killer, heavy to digest, nutritious, hot, eliminates back pain and inflammation. Along with this, it is also beneficial in diseases like heart disease, cholesterol, arthritis, skin burns, etc. Carbohydrate, fiber, fat, protein, vitamin B, vitamin C, iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, etc., are found in many nutrients.

Both the linseed plant and the seed are used. Therefore, its cultivation can prove to be a profitable deal for the farmers.
