Today we are talking about a crop that smells like a rose. That's why this plant is called Palmarosa. Palmarosa grass is also known as Rosha grass. It is used in the manufacture of perfumes and other cosmetics. Apart from this, many types of Ayurvedic medicines are also prepared from it. Being a multi-year crop, it can be cultivated for several 5-6 years by cultivating it once. The length of its plants is about 100 to 150 cm. It is mainly cultivated for obtaining oil. Let us get detailed information on palmarosa grass cultivation.

Seed quantity

  • For cultivation per acre of land, 3 kg of seed is required.

  • For cultivation by spraying method, about 7 kg of seed is required per acre of land.

Suitable soil and climate

  • Hot and dry climate is required for the growth of plants.

  • It should be cultivated in land with proper drainage.

  • The pH level of the soil should be above normal to 9.5.

  • Water logging conditions are harmful to plants. Therefore, it can be successfully cultivated even in irrigated and dry areas.

  • Sow the seeds at a depth of 1 to 1.5 cm. This makes germination easier.

  • Plants are ready for transplanting after 30 to 40 days of sowing the seeds in the nursery.

farm preparation method

  • First do deep plowing one after the other.

  • After this, make the soil friable by deep plowing 2 to 3 times.

  • For good yield, use cow dung manure or vermi compost while preparing the field.

  • Apart from this, mix 60 kg nitrogen, 20 kg phosphorus and 20 kg potash per acre of field.

  • Prepare the beds in the field for transplanting the plants.

  • Keep a distance of 60 cm between all the beds.

Irrigation and Weed Control

  • Give the first irrigation immediately after transplanting the plants.

  • The crop does not require irrigation when it rains.

  • Irrigation is necessary after each harvest of the crop for proper growth of the plants.

  • To control weeds, weeding is done at regular intervals.

Harvesting and Yield

  • In irrigated areas the crop can be harvested 3 to 4 times in a year.

  • In irrigated areas, the crop can be harvested twice a year.

  • Oil is obtained from its flowers and leaves.

  • The flowers have a higher oil content than the leaves. Therefore, harvest after flowering up to 50 percent of the crop.

  • Harvest the crop from a height of 10 to 15 cm from the ground surface.

  • In irrigated areas, 60 to 70 kg of oil is obtained per acre of field per year.
