Modern Rooted Grafted Vines Processing Technology - The Making of Grapevine From Vine to Vine ▶60 SELECTION Materials are selected from vines in high health, with scionwood showing good fruiting characteristics. HAVESTING From June to August selected materials are cut to length, labelled, counted, bundled, and delivered to the processing shed. GRADING According to quality and size. PRE-STORAGE Materials hydrated and sanitized. COLD STORAGE Hydrated materials held in cold storage until grafting or dispatch. Product is pre-graded and size ranges are profiled to facilitate good rootstock and scionwood matching. Hydration and anti fungal treatment keep the vines in premium condition. HYDRATION Materials are received from cold storage by graft date and placed into soak crates for re-hydration prior to grafting. SCIONWOOD CUTTING Canes are cut, bagged, labelled and marshalled. DISBUDDING Budsites are removed from rootstock which is then marshalled and batched together with scionwood. GRAFTING Rootstock and scionwood are V/cleft grafted. A new vine is created. TAPPING Grafted vines are taped at the V/cleft graft union. Coloured tape and printed graft lot labels, allow easy identification of varieties throughout the remaining processes. WAXING The top third of the grafted vines are waxed to protect the bud and the graft union. PACKING Grafted vines are packed into steam sterilized callus bins and packing medium. CALLUS Grafted vines are placed into a temperature and humidity controlled environment until top, root and callus growth meet specifications for field planting or potting. PULL/TRIM/WAX Excess top and root growth is trimmed; tops are re-waxed and vines are batched by graft lot, in preparation for field planting or potting. Vines are ready for potting or field planting. GRAFTED FIELD GROWN VINES Vines are planted in rows by graft lot number. They remain in field nurseries for up to 8 months and are closely monitored for nutrient levels pests & diseases. LIFTING Dormant, grafted field grown vines are trimmed, lifted, packed into bins and sent to the pre-processing cold store. PROCESSING Lifted field grown vines are washed, trimmed and checked for quality. They are batched, counted, labelled, packed into bins & returned to cold store. DISPATCH Processed grafted field grown vines are batched and packed into steam-sterilized bins or waxed cartoons by graft lot, to fulfil customer delivery timetables.
